My grandfather bought the land Paka River Camp sits on in 1939. Originally a rubber plantation, it survived the Second World War, the Communist Insurgency and has remained with the family till today.
As a child, my father who was a member of the British Field Forces told me numerous stories of mysterious disappearances of rubber tappers on the land, tiger attacks and the hunt for communist sympathizers.
Brought up in Malacca, I never got a chance to set foot on this beautiful land until 1994. I immediately fell in love with it. Being an outdoor person, I came back time and again to kayak the river and spent a lot of time trekking the area.
My obsession took over and I started pestering my family to sell me the land. I eventually bought it from my uncles and aunties in 1996. I cleared the land and transformed it into a fruit orchard, carefully preserving the natural terrain in line with my vision of using the land for extreme adventurers.
In 2002, I started the progressive construction of proper camp facilities and eventually these will include natural obstacle courses, several longhouses, fully covered dining areas and field kitchen facilities. Nearby quarries will be converted to allow for rock climbing and abseiling.
The river running past the back of my land will be used for start and end point of kayaking expeditions. The surrounding land's rugged nature will be exploited to provide for tough trekking routes. The natural beauty of the hinterlands and the many rivers and the beautiful beaches of Terengganu provide varied alternative locations for the would-be adventurer to explore. The rich flora and fauna will impress and surprise even the fussiest nature lovers.
With this, I welcome all adventurers, outdoor persons and nature lovers to share with me this beautiful land that is the Paka River Camp experience.
